Summary

An unforgettable and heartwarming debut about how a chance encounter and a list of library books helps forge an unlikely friendship between two very different people—a lonely London widower and a troubled teenager。

Widower Mukesh lives a quiet life in the London Borough of Ealing after losing his beloved wife。 He shops every Wednesday, goes to Temple, and worries about his granddaughter, Priya, who hides in her room reading while he spends his evenings watching nature documentaries。

Aleisha is a bright but anxious teenager working at the local library for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill a Mockingbird。 It’s a list of novels that she’s never heard of before。 Intrigued, and a little bored with her slow job at the checkout desk, she impulsively decides to read every book on the list, one after the other。 As each story gives up its magic, the books transport Aleisha from the painful realities she’s facing at home。

When Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm granddaughter, Aleisha passes along the reading list…hoping that it will be a lifeline for him too。 Slowly, the shared books create a connection between two lonely souls, as fiction helps them escape their grief and everyday troubles and find joy again。

There was so much heart and warmth in THE READING LIST! Highly recommend!⁣⁣⚠️: suicide, death of a loved one 。。。more

This is a book about books and how the characters influence the fabric of our lives: there aren’t enough adjectives to describe my feelings。 My grandmother, who taught me to love books, was on every page。 I cried and cried because I can never share this book with her。 And I know she would have loved it as much as I do。 Mukesh is a character for the ages and will remain in my heart as Atticus, Scout, Hassan, Jo, Amy, Beth, Meg, and Marmee。 My mother came in to find me sobbing with all the love an This is a book about books and how the characters influence the fabric of our lives: there aren’t enough adjectives to describe my feelings。 My grandmother, who taught me to love books, was on every page。 I cried and cried because I can never share this book with her。 And I know she would have loved it as much as I do。 Mukesh is a character for the ages and will remain in my heart as Atticus, Scout, Hassan, Jo, Amy, Beth, Meg, and Marmee。 My mother came in to find me sobbing with all the love and pain for the loss of the one who gave me reading, And for all the books and stories I will never share with Jo (grandmama)。 Yet, I know she follows the path of every book I read, and her presence is in every word。 The book of the year!! This book made me smile as I witnessed Moukesh navigating the pages of my favorite books。i hope it touches all。of you the way it touched me。 。。。more

What debut!!! Wow wow wow! I’ve read some pretty good books this year but THIS book is by far the best。 It’s not only a fun read, but it’s also heartwarming and full of life。 I started recommending this book after only finishing half and now I’ll be hocking it even more。 Adam’s writing is natural and sophisticated and I can’t wait to see what she does in the future!

Sweet Mr。 Mukesh Patel, of Wembley, England, has recently lost his beloved wife。 17 year old Aleisha has taken a “shitty summer job” at the local library (her words, not mine,) to escape from her depressing home life。 The two of them have an awkward encounter at the library that changes everything。 A lovely book about the transformative power of literature to create connections between people, help us develop empathy, and provide comfort and solace when we need it most。

This was my first book I read by Sara and I thought it was pretty good! I liked how different the story was compared to books I usually read so it was a nice change。 I also love how it uses books and libraries in the story since we all are readers here :) I liked the use of the books that the list named off and made me curious to see if I have read any of the ones that were listed which I have read a few of them and kinda makes you want to read all of them just so you know too what they are abou This was my first book I read by Sara and I thought it was pretty good! I was extremely intrigued by this premises。 Who doesn’t love a book about books and the power they have to connect us? Fortunately, I had a long road trip and was therefore able to listen to this in one sitting。 Unfortunately, this one was a mixed bag for me。 I thought the book was largely repetitive for a long while and didn’t get going until the very end。 After that, it was an enjoyable experience。 I will give the author some credit。 By the end, I felt very connected to the characters and this I was extremely intrigued by this premises。 Who doesn’t love a book about books and the power they have to connect us? Yes。 Was the payoff worth it? Yes。 。。。more

The right book finds you at the right time。 A book about books that did not disappoint, and now I want to read the books on the “list”。 I liked how the list brought connections between Mukesh and Aleisha, as well as with others in their lives。

Some books come into our lives and never ever leave, y’all this one is definitely one of those books。 I’ve grown up with books so this one hit home and I found myself crying for just no reason。 Books teach us lessons, they connect us, they give us peace and joy, they help us through difficult times in our lives。 The author did such an amazing job writing this book and it had such a perfect ending。 Definitely for all book lovers。 Thanks to William Morris for my gifted copy。

Not for me。 It came across as too slow-paced, moralistic and feel-goody。 Although I initially found the grandpa character quite charming, after a couple of chapters he started to annoy me with his cluelessness。 The girl character was equally irritating in her moodiness and the "libraries are dying" message that was so frequently repeated just made me depressed。 Not for me。 It came across as too slow-paced, moralistic and feel-goody。 Although I initially found the grandpa character quite charming, after a couple of chapters he started to annoy me with his cluelessness。 The girl character was equally irritating in her moodiness and the "libraries are dying" message that was so frequently repeated just made me depressed。 。。。more

It's exciting to discover a new author。 Discovering new authors is like discovering whole new countries。 Although it may not be true for all books, however reading Sara Nisha Adams offers me the advantage of being one-to-one。 It's exciting to discover a new author。 Discovering new authors is like discovering whole new countries。 Although it may not be true for all books, however reading Sara Nisha Adams offers me the advantage of being one-to-one。 。。。more

Most days, this would have been a four-star read for me。 I love books about books bringing joy to people! But I've got a bad case of the Pandemic Blues this weekend。 And the main characters lead lives of quiet desperation through most of the book。 I get it, they must so that their lives can improve。 But it wasn't a great match for my mental headspace。 On the bright side, I loved the book talk, even if it was rather elementary。 Most days, this would have been a four-star read for me。 I love books about books bringing joy to people! Great story!!! This story reminded me why I LOVE to read。 Some of the books listed through the book I have read before, but reading about how the characters feel about these books makes you remember what you loved/ hated about the book while you read it。 Makes you feel like rereading them too。 Highly recommend this book t o anyone who simply "loves to read"。 Would love to read a sequel of this story, just to connect with the characters again。😄😄😄 Great story!!! This is a lovely debut novel with a diverse (mostly Indian) cast of characters living in Wembly, England。 The story centers on a list of books found on a library table by teen librarian, Aleisha。 Soon she is called upon to recommend one to an elderly man, Mukesh Patel, new to the library, and she herself begins reading it too。 Aleisha and Mukesh are both dealing with personal loss and slowly begin to connect as friends, through books。 Slowly, other people find copies of the same book list and ta This is a lovely debut novel with a diverse (mostly Indian) cast of characters living in Wembly, England。 The story centers on a list of books found on a library table by teen librarian, Aleisha。 Soon she is called upon to recommend one to an elderly man, Mukesh Patel, new to the library, and she herself begins reading it too。 Aleisha and Mukesh are both dealing with personal loss and slowly begin to connect as friends, through books。 Slowly, other people find copies of the same book list and take away lessons from the stories that are personal to their circumstances。 The network of people connected to one another through the book list grows as the story develops。 Even though there were sad components to the story (and trigger alert re: suicide), as a reader I related to how profoundly books can impact and teach us。 It is rare to find a novel built around the meaning of books to readers and this one does a good job of it。 4。5 stars。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book, if you liked the Midnight library, then you'll probably like this。 It has a very similar feel to the midnight library, although the story and topics are slightly different。 But you definitely get something from it, that you could possibly learn from or it makes you think a little。 The subjects in the story are very vast and it centers around many deep topics like bereavement, death, suicide, loss and connections between people and community。 Some stories don't work we I really enjoyed this book, if you liked the Midnight library, then you'll probably like this。 It has a very similar feel to the midnight library, although the story and topics are slightly different。 But you definitely get something from it, that you could possibly learn from or it makes you think a little。 The subjects in the story are very vast and it centers around many deep topics like bereavement, death, suicide, loss and connections between people and community。 Some stories don't work well when there are too many topics crammed into one story, but this is not one of those。 Each topic is woven into the story very well and worked for story。 The characters in the story develop and change as the story goes on, which is normally the sign of a good book。 The author does well in showing how they grow as characters, the things they learn as the story goes on。 The library is the connection to each of the characters, all connected by a list of books left by a mysterious person, to be found by people who have yet to find the magic and beauty in books, to help them heal and move on from their sorrows in life。 The two main characters in the story are both dealing with different kind of losses and struggles in life。 Mukesh has lost his wife, and in the two years of grief he struggled to move on。 Aliesha is a struggling teenager, having been a carer for her mother alongside her brother。 Things seem to get worse, but the two find each other in the library forging a bond and friendship neither could have imagined or expected。 I knew within 8 or so chapters who the mysterious person was, but even so it still felt like a mystery and I was intrigued how the story and mysterious list writer would be revealed。 I was so hooked on the story, and I wanted to see how it would play out, it was interesting to see how the characters would find the heart to move on, or learn to deal with the troubles they face。 I wish Aiden would have had a happier story, but I guess it had to be that way for Aliesha's grief and for Mukesh to help her in the way she helped him。 There's just so much I want to say about this book, I'd definitely recommend this book and think everyone should read it。 。。。more

This book was about people who found a hand written reading list and how this list helped them be better humans。 The really compelling part was the description of the books on the list, it made me want to reread old favorites and try books that I haven't read yet。 Pure book lover candy! I loved this book so much。 I actually put it down for a week before I read the last chapter because I didn't want it to end。 It is both beautifully written and perfectly conveys the joy of reading, and sharing books with others。 The characters all discover the titular reading list in different ways and it brings something different to each of their lives but they all find something or someone new as a result。I haven't read all of the books on the list but I will definitely be doing so very soon。 I loved this book so much。 I actually put it down for a week before I read the last chapter because I didn't want it to end。 It is both beautifully written and perfectly conveys the joy of reading, and sharing books with others。 The characters all discover the titular reading list in different ways and it brings something different to each of their lives but they all find something or someone new as a result。I haven't read all of the books on the list but I will definitely be doing so very soon。。。I might even borrow them from my local library。 。。。more

Nourishment for the book-lover’s soul。 I read a library copy of this book, which is so appropriate given the story is essentially one long love letter to libraries, but I’ll definitely be buying a copy to add to my “favorite books about books” forever collection。 I was surprised at how sad parts of the book are, and the grief and trauma are palpable, but the sweetness of the rest of the story counteract it well。 This is going to be my top recommendation for quite awhile!
